This workshop will provide an overview of the historic and current campaigns demanding our state meaningfully invest in Ethnic Studies, focusing on the legislative priorities of Washington Ethnic Studies Now (WAESN) campaign for the upcoming 2025 legislative session. Since the 1960s Ethnic Studies has been demanded by our students, but after 60 years, it remains only "encouraged" in Washington State.
WAESN is convening a coalition of students, educators, multi-ethnic community organizations, and other education stakeholders to advocate for policy that provides support for statewide Ethnic Studies professional development and endorsement pathways for all educators. We must support educators to become anti-racist and culturally responsive, if we are to disrupt the cycle of curricular harm students are subjected to in our schools.
In preparation for the legislative session beginning in January, we will provide information and resources to get involved in our campaign that calls for intersectional and multi-ethnic solidarity. To learn more:
